London fair for Christmas shoppers with a conscience
Comment Email Print
¬†There will be world music and dancing, food stalls, arts, crafts, clothing and exotic gifts, at this year's Worldfair at the Conway Hall in Red Lion Square on Friday December 5 (4-8pm) and Saturday December 6 (11am - 6pm) Now in its 17th year, with over 60 fair trade stalls, this is London's most established fair trade fair - giving shoppers a chance to buy their Christmas presents while helping communities around the world. The event is organised by Oxfam, War on Want and the World Development Movement. The stalls will be run by ethical traders, charities, co-operatives including several CAFOD and Christian Aid partners. The two-day programme includes dance music from Brazil, Katak dancing from India, North African Arabic music, Colombian music and West African Kora music. Visitors can also sample food from Womad's famed Madras Cafť, and get into the festive spirit with a few drinks. Helen Fowell of World Development Movement, one of the event organisers said: "The collapse of the World Trade Organisation talks in Cancun this September was a clear signal that developing countries are resisting the current unfair global trade system. And their unease is shared by people all over the UK who are campaigning for trade that benefits the poorest people in the world rather than exploiting their economies and their environments. Worldfair is the perfect opportunity to buy unique Christmas presents with a clear conscience, knowing that the people who produce them have been paid a fair price." Creche facilities are available on Saturday and Conway Hall has access and facilities for disabled visitors. The nearest tube is Holborn. Although entrance is free, visitors are asked for a small donation of £3 on the door. See Listings Pages for performance details.
