Bristol parish backs international athlete at World Games

¬†St Teresa's Catholic parish in Filton, Bristol, is raising funds to support one of their parishioners who is soon to take part in the fourth Dwarf World Games. Peter Clark, aged 20, has won a place in the UK team which is heading to Paris in July. All the 95 athletes on UK team have restricted growth, and two members of the team were chosen to represent Great Britain in the Paralympics in Athens last year. Peter's speciality is sprinting. He will participate in the 60 metre and 100 metre races. Peter is an adult helper for his local HCPT group - The Pilgrimage Trust. HCPT takes children and young adults with special needs to Lourdes. Peter took part in this event as a child on a number of occasions which this fired his enthusiasm to become involved in the life of the Church. Peter volunteers as a helper every year. As a junior athlete, in the second World Games in 1997, Peter won two gold medals and even broke the world record at both distances! The following year he broke his own record at the 100 metre sprint while participating in the national championships. He was lucky enough to be chosen to represent the UK in the 2001 games as a senior, and his whole family travelled to Canada to support him. He has been training hard, both on his own and under the watchful eye of his grand dad and coach, Gordon. This year's games take place in July, and Peter will be supported by his Dad Pete, and a couple of friends. Each athlete is required to raise at least £500 towards the cost of travel and accommodation for the team. Peter's fundraising kicked off back in April with a family skittles evening held at St Teresa's Catholic Social Centre raising over £150. Dad Pete and two of his colleagues from the Ambulance Service will be completing the 'Three Peaks Challenge' on the weekend of 25 and 26 June, hopefully raising the remainder. Pete said: "Peter is looking forward to the world games next month. I know he appreciates the support of so many of his friends within the community at St Teresa's." If you would like to sponsor Peter, or help in any other way, please contact his dad Pete Clark on 07957 703075 or 0117 940 1665. Everybody at St Teresa's wishes Peter all the best at the games in July. Parish Priest, Father Tom Finnegan said: "Pete is a great chap, who puts his all into everything, whether its as a helper with HCPT in Lourdes, or as an athlete or just doing a good job at a local supermarket. We wish him all the best at the World Games in July and we all hope it's Gold all the way!"
