London: summer celebrations at Farm Street
Comment Email Print
¬†Farm Street Jesuit Church in central London will be holding two celebrations this month. As part of the 'Open the Doors' weekend being celebrated in all the parishes of the Catholic Archdiocese of Westminster, the church in Mayfair, will be holding an Open Day on Sunday, July 16 to which all will be very welcome. The programme includes Family Mass at 9.30am, Sung Latin Mass with the renowned Farm Street Choir at 11am, and a picnic in Mount Street Gardens (next to the church) starting at 12.30pm. "We aim to provide something for all the family," says Parish Priest, Father William Pearsall SJ. "We'll be laying on lots of food and drink, as well as live entertainment and music, and stalls selling items as diverse as cakes and jam to books and religious art. We'll also be providing a tour of our beautiful and historic church at 3.30pm. We really hope as many people as possible ≠ both from the neighbourhood and from farther afield - will be able to join us." The 'Open the Doors' event at Farm Street Church will conclude with Benediction at 4pm, followed by Mass. Two weeks later, on Monday 31 July, the church will be joining the rest of the Society of Jesus worldwide to mark the 450th anniversary of the death of St Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. There will be a special Sung Mass at 6pm at which former students of Jesuit schools and colleges will be particularly welcome. The Jesuits at present are responsible for nine schools in Britain, covering the whole spectrum - comprehensive and private, preparatory and secondary, day schools and boarding schools, boys-only and co-educational. Father Pearsall says he is looking forward to welcoming to the celebration many men and women who, over the years, have experienced a Jesuit education and have since gone on to become 'men and women for others' ≠ to quote one of the aims of the Society of Jesus' education apostolate. There will be hundreds of events taking place around the capital during the Open the Doors weekend (as well as many other community events and destivals for young people).
