¬†Beyond Expediency- A day conference on honest discipleship in today's Church takes place on Saturday, 7 October. Speakers will be: Tina Beattie, Reader in Christian Studies and Senior Fellow, Centre for Excellence for Education in Human Rights, Social Justice and Citizenship and Roehampton University, and Michael Kirwan SJ, Head of Theology, Heythrop College, University of London. Tina Beattie's most recent book is "New Catholic Feminism: Theology & Theory" (Routledge 2005) Michael Kirwan's "Discovering Girard" was published by DLT in 2004. In a statement the organisers say: 'This event follows the 2005 Conference: Renewing Catholicity in a Diverse Church. We will use the occasion to launch A LETTER TO ALL THE PEOPLE OF GOD, incorporating reflections from last year's gathering. Reflecting upon the first year of Benedict XVI's pontificate, in small groups and plenary discussion, the conference will explore structural issues of truth and honesty in today's Church. How do we create open conversations about honest discipleship within the Church? We will become alert to how scapegoating and violence are woven into our processes of reflection and action, as polarisation becomes increasingly destructive within a community of faith. 'This will be a wake-up call to all concerned with reform and renewal in Church and society, concluding with a creative liturgy. Booking is essential since preparatory reading material, drawn from contributions by Timothy Radcliffe OP and Richard McBrien - University of Notre Dame USA - will be sent to all participants in advance.' Conference fee: (before 25 September 2006) £15.00 At the door: £20.00.
