Comment Email Print
¬†Douai Abbey in Berkshire plays host to a group musicians from Jamaica on 9 December. Proceeds from their' Caribbean Christmas concert will go toa new children's orphanage and Aids hospice. The Mount Friendship project in the hills of Iron River, St Andrew, Jamaica, will comprise an orphanage, hospice for HIV/Aids sufferers and a farm. It will also include a prayer centre for international pilgrims to work and live in community with the poor and marginalised. The project is run by the Missionaries of the Poor, founded in 1981 by Fr Richard Ho Lung. Fr Ho Lung said: "At Mount Friendship, we help the Word become flesh by gathering the poor into one holy community, and caring for them as the Father would care for us. We find joy in bringing others into the service of God's little ones." The orphanage will feature a residential care unit for 100 children who are mentally and physically challenged, orphaned, or abandoned by their families. Fr Ho Lung added: "We embrace all the simple lessons of life that children can teach us, recalling that unless we become as little children, we cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven. So, as Missionaries of the Poor, we welcome those who society has rejected; we share our hearts with them. We help to give them hope and God's tender love." The hospice will provide care and attention for HIV/Aids sufferers in their last days. The Missionaries of the Poor is an international Catholic religious order with houses in Jamaica, India, the Philippines, Haiti and Uganda. Two of the Brothers in Jamaica were murdered last year (as reported on ICN). Their website is at www.missionariesofthepoor.org. The Caribbean Christmas concert at Douai Abbey takes place on 9 December. Tickets are £10 from the Missionaries of the Poor Supporters Association, 01494 763518 or email JohnBCullen@aol.com.
