Obituary: Fr Andrew Donnelly, O.Carm

It is with sadness and trusting in the tender mercy of God that the British Province of Carmelites announce the death early this morning of our brother Andrew Donnelly. Joseph Donnelly was born in Carfin, Scotland on 4 June 1929. After service in the RAF he entered the Carmelite Order in September 1951, taking the religious name, Andrew. He made first profession of vows on 8th September 1952. Following profession he studied Philosophy at the Angelicum in Rome and then, still in Rome, studied Theology at the Order's International College before being ordained to the priesthood at Aylesford Priory on 21 July 1957. Andrew served in a variety of ministries in the different communities of the province often in positions of responsibility; for a number of years he was vocations director and also served as prior, parish priest, university chaplain and bursar. His last active appointment was at St Francis Xavier's in his native Carfin at that time in the care of the Carmelites. Since 2002 Andrew has lived in retirement close to his family. In 2007 he would have celebrated his golden jubilee of priesthood. May he rest in peace. The Requiem Mass will be at The Friars, Aylesford at 11.30am on Friday, 5 January.
