Ministers and motors: holy rollers hit Christian show
Comment Email Print
¬†A pink haired clergywoman with matching Nissan Micra and a Pentecostal preacher with a Russian military motorbike are among contributors to the most unusual vehicle rally of the year. Ministers and Motors is a unique event on the opening day of this year's National Christian Resources Exhibition (CRE) at Sandown Park, Esher, Surrey which runs from Tuesday 15 ≠ Friday 18 May. CRE, often dubbed the 'ideal church show', will be opened by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, who will be driven there in an environmentally-friendly Honda Civic hybrid. "According to a recent survey, most visitors to CRE think Jesus would drive a Campervan if embarking on his ministry today," said CRE's Joy Gilmour "We decided to invite a range of unusual clergy to the show who are wild about wheels ≠ and tell us how they minister through their motors." Rev Wendy Saunders dyed her hair pink during a sabbatical four years ago. "I had no intention of keeping it but it opened up conversations in the parish," explains Wendy, priest-in-charge at St Saviour's, Eltham. After discovering Nissan were launching a pink car, developed from a breast-cancer awareness project, she decided that a new set of wheels - and a pink jump suit - would complete the ensemble. Through the car she raises the profile of Clowns in the Sky, a charity dedicated to the research and treatment of childhood brain tumours. Rev Paul Sinclair, founder of Motorcycle Funerals, will display a Ural motorbike, an authentic Russian military sidecar outfit - complete with machinegun mount. "I love to take kids for rides on this wonderful machine," says Paul, an Elim Pentecostal minister based in Derbyshire, "but I'm also open to taking brides to church for shotgun weddings!" Other contributions will include novelty vehicles from 4 Weddings, Fun and a Funeral - a Woking-based organisation who will display: 'Bow-down' and 'Worship' ≠ a Robin Reliant trike and bull-nose Morris tractor each respectively modified with the bow and stern of a fibreglass dinghy painted white for weddings, fun days and even funerals ) * A 1963 AJS motor-cycle combination with a coffin on the sidecar platform * A 1952 Cyclemaster 25cc motorised butcher's bike * A 1949 Francis Barnet 100cc Powerbike * A Honda Gold-wing motor-cycle combination with trailer hearse * A BMW ex-police solo bike featuring a publicity trailer with mini-church on top! "Whether you are celebrating a wonderful wedding or another significant achievement in your life, we're there to give the occasion a special appeal," says 4 Weddings' Graham Newton. Ministers and Motors will take place on the first day of CRE only ≠ Tuesday 15 May. For more information about the CRE see: www.creonline.co.uk
