Ireland: Archbishop Sean Brady to be made Cardinal

¬†This morning His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, at the end of his weekly Wednesday Audience in St Peter's Square Rome, announced that he will create 24 new Cardinals to include Archbishop SeŠn Brady, Archbishop of Armagh, Primate of All Ireland and President of the Irish Bishops' Conference. On news of his appointment, Archbishop Brady said: "I am deeply honoured and humbled by Pope Benedict's announcement that I am to be made a Cardinal. Today's news is a mark of the affection and esteem of the Holy Father for the whole Church in Ireland. "It is a daunting privilege to join Cardinal Cahal Daly and Cardinal Desmond Connell in the College of Cardinals. This small country is to have three Cardinals for the first time in its history. "I ask people for their prayers as I undertake my new responsibilities within the universal Church." Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor said: "I am delighted that the Holy Father has decided to create Archbishop Sean Brady as a Cardinal. In a quiet and steadfast way Archbishop Brady has made an outstanding contribution to peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland. I myself, together with his countless other friends, warmly welcome this recognition of his devoted service to the Church and his admission to the College of Cardinals." Archbishop SeŠn Brady, Archbishop of Armagh and President of the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference was born on 16 August, 1939, in Laragh, County Cavan. He has a brother Con Brady who lives in Cavan, and a sister Mrs Kitty Mulligan who lives in Dublin as well as two nephews and a niece. He was educated at: Caulfield National School, Laragh. St Patrick's College, Cavan, St Patrick's College, Maynooth (1957-60) and the Pontifical Irish College, Rome (1960-67). He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (BA, St Patrick's College, Maynooth, 1960)(Ancient Classics). Licentiate in Theology (S.T.L., Lateran University, Rome, 1964). Doctorate in Canon Law (D.C.L., Lateran University, Rome, 1967). Honorary Doctorate in Law (L.L.D, University of Ulster, 2002). He was ordained priest 22nd February, 1964. Ordained Coadjutor Archbishop of Armagh 19th February, 1995. Installed as Archbishop of Armagh, 3rd November, 1996. Archbishop Brady was Professor, St.Patrick's College, Cavan (1967-80), Vice-Rector, Irish College, Rome (1980-87), Rector, Irish College, Rome (1987-93). PP, Castletara, Co. Cavan (Ballyhaise) (1993-94). Coadjutor Archbishop of Armagh 19th February 1995-1st October 1996) Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland (1st October, 1996-to date).
