CAFOD response to government Climate Change Command paper
Comment Email Print
In response to the government's new paper on climate change issued today, Alex Robertson, Deputy Head of Policy at CAFOD, Catholic Aid Agency, said: "CAFOD welcomes the UK's leadership on climate change and the introduction of a strong and effective framework for reducing UK greenhouse gas emissions. However the current Bill falls short of the mark by ignoring strong scientific evidence and key recommendations from all three parliamentary committees that reviewed the bill. "The evidence is already clear that the UK needs to commit to reducing carbon emissions by at least 80, not 60, per cent by 2050. Any delay in setting these stronger targets will mean that precious time is lost." "The UK Government is setting too low a standard with this current Bill. Stronger measures are needed if the UK is going to contribute towards stabilising global temperature warming at 2C. "People living in poverty will be amongst those most affected by climate change. They have done the least to cause the problem, but will suffer the harshest effects and have fewest resources to adapt. Adequately tackling climate change is essential if the UK's good work towards fighting poverty is not to be washed away by rising global temperatures."
