Carmelite Brother Eugene McKenna has died

Fr Tony Lesser from the British Province of Carmelites sent us the following statement yesterday: It is with sadness but trusting in the mercy of God that the British Province of Carmelites announces the death of our brother Eugene McKenna on 1st June 2008. Joseph McKenna was born in Clogher, Ireland on 18th November 1922 and joined the Carmelites in 1956 taking Eugene as his religious name. He made first profession of vows in 1958 and Solemn Vows in 1961. He will be remembered by many visitors to Aylesford Priory in the 1960's where he ran the farm and where his ready welcome and easy way made him friend to young and old alike. With the closure of the farm at Aylesford Eugene joined the Carmelite community at the then Whitefriars School in Cheltenham where he cared for the extensive grounds there. His next appointment was to Aberystwyth where the Carmelites had the care of the parish and university chaplaincy. Eugene remained in Aberystwyth until his death. Always a man of prayer he had a deep sense of spirituality and was involved in the charismatic renewal from its beginning in Britain. Eugene had a real gift for hospitality knowing how to make people feel at home taking to heart the words of St. Paul to "make hospitality your special concern". We pray that he may find that same welcome in God's house. The funeral rites will take place at Aylesford Priory, Kent with the reception of the remains on Sunday 8th June at 6.00pm and the Requiem Mass on Monday 9th June at 2.30pm followed by burial in the province cemetery.
