¬†The annual government statistics on poverty in the UK are being published today. The national ecumenical group, Church Action on Poverty (CAP) say the figures will reveal that the government is falling short of its ambition to tackle the problem, despite changes to the child tax credit and benefits system over the past two years. An additional £3bn would be needed to lift 1.7 million children out of poverty. CAP National Coordinator Niall Cooper said: "These disappointing figures show what a huge task the Government took on when it committed to halving child poverty. Much more commitment and investment are needed if we are ever to reach the target."
