Newman College reaches the UK Top Ten for Theology

Newman College of Higher Education, the Catholic College of Higher Education based in Bartley Green, Birmingham is celebrating after Newman's Theology Department was ranked eighth in the UK, an important achievement for a small Church College without the resources of large universities.

The Theology Department scored highly in many areas including an impressive nine out of ten for added value and staff to student ratio, and scoring eight out of ten for graduate employment prospects.

The range of Theology courses has expanded significantly in recent years with a Theology for Education single honours degree complementing the existing Masters Degree in Contemporary Theology, primary and secondary teacher training courses with a Theology or Religious education specialism and a combined honours Theology degree. New courses in Philosophy, Religious Education and Ethics have also given further choice for Theology students at Newman.

The league table, which looks at a range of factors including staff to student ratios, employment prospects after graduation and quality of teaching staff is based on information provided by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). Teaching staff are assessed on their qualifications and each institution is given a value added rating based on how many students graduate with a first class or upper second class degree given their initial entry requirements.

Newman Principal, Pamela Taylor, said: "As a Catholic College Theology remains an important area of academic study crucial to the College Mission. Theology deserves to be in the top 10 in the UK given the commitment of staff to students and their outstanding teaching. The overall success of the College in a range of areas is very pleasing, particularly as our work is also being recognised on a national scale."
