Murder in west London parish

Was it the butler who done it?

Smithers the butler, ably played by Father Jeremy Trood, and six members of the Parish recently performed a play at St Margaret's Catholic Church in East Twickenham. The play was called Sir Roger's Return and set in 1928.

At the end of the second scene there was a ghastly horrid murder with the Countess Bianca Costafiore poisoned by a cocktail that had been handed to her by Sir Roger D'Unloverly but prepared by Lady Emily Manners and other members of the family. They all had a motive but who was the murderer?

Fortunately Inspector Jip was quickly on the scene and provided the audience, of over 100 parishioners, with extra clues, such as the crumpled letter found in the fireplace. The audience who were in tables of eight, each named after a famous detective, were allowed to question the family, which they did vigorously!

They were then given 10 minutes to deduce who the murderer was and why. From the 14 tables only four got the correct answer and then a tie-break question provided us with the finest team of detectives in St Margaret's.

The play was written locally and had only been performed once before. Due to unprecedented demand the cast have been asked to perform another play next year, which will be the third play.

Over £1,400 was raised for Street Child Africa and St Margaret,s Church Restoration Fund.

The cast were: Dan Evenhuis, Sarah watts, Katherine Backler, Father Jeremy Trood, Andrea McGuinness, Chris Stanley and Colin Messenger, it was directed by Joe Early and written by Robert Munday."
