New head at Jesuit college

Mr Philip MacDonald, currently Head at Mount St Mary's College near Sheffield, has been appointed Head of the City of London Freemans' School with effect from September 2007.

Philip has been Head at the Mount for the past nine years, during which time it has seen a substantial increase in the number of pupils on an annual basis with a 62% rise over this period. This year, the number reached a record 405. At the same time, the performance at A level has produced a 100% pass rate for the last four years; in 2006, 65% of grades were A or B grades. Although it has a non selective intake, the College also recorded 90% A* to C grades at GCSE last summer.

Earlier this year, the Governors of Mount St Mary's College approved Phase 1 of an ambitious Sports Project, which includes construction of a new Pavilion and parking. Work started in July, with completion expected in March 2007. Proposals for Phases II and III include a 6-lane floodlit athletics track, an artificial Rugby Pitch and a Sports Hall.

Mount St Mary's College was originally founded by the Jesuits at Stanley Grange near Derby in 1620, and is one of the oldest foundations in the Midlands. The present College opened on the Spinkhill site in 1842; its founder was Fr Randall Lythgoe SJ, who was Provincial of the Society of Jesus in England at that time.

The College is now advertising for a new head. The closing date for applications is 1 December 2006. Further details are on the Mount St Mary's web site at: http://www.msmcollege.co.uk
