Philippines: young adults challenged to think beyond 'Mcworld'

Santosh Digal

The Pontifical Missionary Societies of the Philippines on the occasion of its 75th foundation anniversary held a workshop for youth workers.

The National Mission Youth Camp, at St Michael Retreat House, Antipolo City was hosted by Mgr Gilbert Garcera, national director of the Commission on Mission, in preparation for the 1st Asian Mission Congress, October 2006.

Recalling the 4th Asian Youth Day (July 30 to August 5, Hong Kong) which urged the young participants to be missionaries of hope in their continent, Mgr Garcera thought of convening selected youth leaders to reflect on the results of the national youth survey and the phenomenon on globalization.

Fr Andrew Recepcion, Mission director of Caceres, explaining the globalization issue, said that "our situation brings us to a consciousness that the world is changing? that little by little 'the world village mentality' creeps in the doorsteps of our self. In this "Mcworld" experience, Fr Recepcion challenged the young people "to think globally, act locally and live virtuously."

Further, Fr Conegundo Garganta, executive secretary of the Commission, reporting on the survey conducted by the Episcopal Commission, expressed his high hopes for the Filipino youth.

The participants of the mission youth camp resolved to design a formation module on globalization; to synergize personnel, program and formation resources; to prioritize integral faith formation as dictated in the National Pastoral Consultation for Church Renewal (NPCCR); and to establish a youth-mission electronic group.
