Young Adults: chance of a lifetime in Australia
There are still some places left on the MAGiS-08 event a unique opportunity for young adults to undertake a pilgrimage to Australia next July; to take part in a range of 'service placements'; and to join Pope Benedict XVI and thousands of other young adults from around the world for the World Youth Day events in Sydney. The British Jesuits and several other religious orders which are based in the UK and share the spirituality of St Ignatius Loyola are planning a comprehensive programme of events for young people who want to give and find more* on their journeys of faith, starting with a retreat and weekend of preparation in February.
"Many young adults have expressed an interest in the pilgrimage and associated events, but wanted to know how much it's going to cost before committing themselves," said Fr Dave Stewart SJ from First Sunday plus (FSPlus)Young Adult Ministry at the Mount Street Jesuit Centre. "Well, we've done our sums and reckon we're going to be able to offer the entire package for around £1,500. The final cost will depend on numbers, airline availability and other factors, of course; but since it will include the flights and full participation in the MAGiS activities and WYD events, I hope young Catholics will see this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and very good value."
The programme in Australia begins on 5 July 2008 with "experiments" or service placements lasting between five and seven days. Up to 2,000 young adults from around the world are then expect in Sydney for the Ignatian gathering, where the focus will be on sharing and service, community and companionship, and spirituality in the tradition of St Ignatius. Finally, the entire MAGiS group will participate in all the WYD08 activities, culminating with Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict on 20 July.
The preparatory retreat is scheduled for
23/24 February 2008 at Buckden Towers, St Neots, Cambridgeshire.
