Luke's Gospel to be explored on Radio 4
Greg Watts
BBC Radio 4 will be broadcasting a series of programmes on the Gospel of Luke in the week before Christmas.
A play examining a key moment in the gospel will be broadcast at 2.15pm from Monday 17th to Friday 21st December.
The first focuses on the call of Peter and Andrew; and the second on the outsiders and outcasts who followed Jesus. The remaining three explore Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, his trial and crucifixion and his birth.
The cast includes Peter Firth, Lorraine Ashbourne and Penelope Wilton.
Each play will be followed by a short documentary, presented by Ernie Rea, which will examine the gospel's origins and provide some of the social, religious and political background to the New Testament world.
It is often not recognised that the Christmas story is, in fact, two stories combined, that of Luke and that of Matthew. The gospels of Mark and John have no infancy narratives. Luke and Matthew both point back to the Old Testament and forward to what Jesus is to accomplish. And it is only in Luke that the pivotal role of Mary is really spelled out.
