Leading theologians to lecture at Liverpool Hope University

Two world leading theological specialists from both sides of the globe will deliver public lectures at Liverpool Hope University's Theological Society on Thursday 8th March from 5pm to 7pm (Hope Park, Room AJB 007) all are welcome.

Fr James Keenan, SJ, Professor of Theological Ethics at Boston College and one of the world's foremost specialists in the field, will deliver his lecture on the subject of 'HIV/AIDS: The Expanding Ethical Challenge'.

Dr Gerard Mannion, Liverpool Hope's Associate Professor of Ecclesiology and Ethics has helped organise Fr Keenan's National Tour this year which has also seen him deliver lectures in London, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Durham.

A Jesuit of the New York Province, Fr James Keenan was educated at Fordham University (New York), the Weston Jesuit School of Theology (Boston, MA) and at the Gregorian in Rome.

He subsequently served as Professor at each of these institutions. He has published extensively and given talks and lectures around the globe.

He also advised the US Catholic Bishops' Conference on Health Care Ethics and his books have attracted much praise as well as earning prestigious prizes from across the US Catholic Community.

Dr Tina Beattie of Roehampton University, London, will deliver her lecture 'From Rosaries to Rights: Towards an Integrated Catholicism'.

In her paper, Dr Beattie will consider some of the tensions which arise in the modern Church with regard to human rights issues, and asks why there seem to be two different approaches depending on whether the Church is addressing questions of social justice, when it has a radical voice which often challenges conventional values and stereotypes, or questions of sexual ethics, when it is much more conservative in its desire to uphold conventional values and stereotypes.

She suggests that the reason for this might lie in a deeply rooted fear of sex in a tradition of clerical celibacy, and a consequent failure to address questions of human sexuality and embodiment in a spirit of open and honest dialogue and enquiry.

Dr Tina Beattie is a Reader in Christian Studies and Senior Fellow in Crucible, the Centre for Education in Human Rights, Social Justice and Citizenship, at Roehampton University, London.

She has published widely in the areas of Catholic Theology, gender studies and Mariology, and she is now undertaking new research in the areas of natural law and human rights.

Her most recent book was New Catholic Feminism: Theology and Theory (Routledge 2006).
