Leeds:
Trinity & All Saints College achieves Fairtrade status
Leeds Trinity & All Saints has celebrated Fair Trade Fortnight
by earning the award of Fairtrade Status.
Through the collaborative effort of the students' union, Hospitality
Services staff and Chaplaincy, Leeds Trinity has met the five
goals set down by the Fairtrade Foundation to become a Fairtrade
college. Fairtrade foods and drinks are on sale in all campus
outlets and served at meetings, and a Fairtrade policy has been
adopted to ensure an ongoing commitment to increasing Fairtrade
consumption on campus.
Margaret Siberry, CAFOD's Diocesan Manager for the Diocese of
Leeds, presented the certificate to Dr Freda Bridge, Principal,
and Peter Travis, LTU President.
Margaret said: "I am really encouraged by the award of Fairtrade
status to Leeds Trinity, and the example set by the students and
staff in taking responsibility towards creating a fairer world.
It is a great fillip to efforts within the Leeds diocese which
is working towards becoming a Fairtrade diocese."
Dominique Owen, Hospitality Services Director, said: "We
are pleased to receive this award which recognises our continuing
work on campus to promote and support Fairtrade products and the
Fairtrade ethos."
Fairtrade Fortnight, 26 February to 11 March, featured a variety
of events and activities on campus, including coffee mornings,
a Fairtrade quiz, and a beach party on real sand in the Students'
Union, where partygoers enjoyed cocktails made with Fairtrade
juice.
Margaret Siberry also accepted a donation to CAFOD of £666.66
from Leeds Trinity Union, which raised the money during Rag Week
earlier this term.
Peter Travis said: "The Union officers are proud of our
involvement in promoting Fairtrade and our fundraising efforts
enabling us to make this donation to CAFOD. Despite the relatively
small numbers on campus, our students make a huge contribution
to good causes."
