Bristol: kids scoop two eco awards in one day

Alison Spurrell

Children from the eco-group at St Teresa's Catholic Primary in Bristol had a day of surprises when they were invited to the Council House. They knew that, along with other schools they were there to receive their Travel Plan Award the result of several months of dedicated work by pupils and staff.

The first surprise of the day was a ride on a Bristol ferry around the city docks a reward for their hard work throughout the year. At the Council House they shared their experiences with other schools and proudly received their Travel Plan certificate.

The group performed their Eco Song to the other schools and dignitaries present and then the biggest surprise of the day. Bishop Declan Lang presented them with the much-coveted Eco Schools Green Flag Award. Green Flag assessors had recently visited the school and been extremely impressed, not only by the many and varied eco-activities going on in school, but by the knowledge and involvement of the eco-group children themselves. They pupils showed the assessors around the school to prove their involvement in compost collection, vegetable growing, mosaic making, the use of a water butt, the placement of bird boxes and feeders and the planting of new trees.

Lucy, Year 5, said: "The Green Flag is recognition for the Eco work we have done at our school. We are very proud to receive it."

Victoria, Year 5, said: "It was a fun day and I really enjoyed it."

Charlie, Year 4, said, "We were allowed to go in the Council Chamber and I will remember it to tell my grandchildren."

Anna, Year 5, said: "We had no idea what was going to happen and then the Bishop presented us with our Green Flag!"

Jessica, Year 6, said: "When we got our green flag and sang our song in front of all the other schools it was embarrassing but great fun!"

Kelsee, Year 6, said: "When we got our green flag we were so happy!"

Bishop Declan added: "The pupils and staff at St Teresa's well deserve their recent awards. I know that they have an awareness of the importance of our environment and the way in which we can protect it.
