Kenya: Young Christian Students rally

Francis Njuguna

Over 3,000 members of the Young Christian Students Movement, (YCS) converged at the National Catholic Youth Centre, Ruaraka near here-Nairobi on Saturday for their annual rally, on the theme of: Youth, Career and Good Governance.

Addressing the gathering, Bishop Salesius Mugambi of Meru Diocese, Chair of the Catholic Bishops' commission on Pastoral and lay apostolate, urged the members of the Movement to be action-oriented.

The Bishop stressed that by being action-oriented, young people would assist in poverty-eradication as well as insecurity.

Bishop Mugambi assured them that the Bishops were committed to promoting their religious welfare.

YCS is one of the 30 youth movements in the Kenyan Catholic Church today.

Before he addressed the gathering, Bishop Mugambi presided over a Mass to mark the rally. He was assisted by Father Clement Micheni, the YCS chaplain for Meru diocese and Jeremiah Munyoki, the YCS chaplain Kitui Diocese. The newly appointed national coordinator for the YCS, Mr Anthony Kiarie also took part.

The YCS for Kitui was voted best for its performance last year. The second position was taken by the YCS in Eldoret Diocese, while Meru Diocese came third. All three were given awards by Bishop Mugambi.
