HARARE, ZIMBABWE - 5 February - 160 words

Priest in roadside highjack

A Jesuit priest was abducted in Chishawasha, 20km east of Harare last Tuesday night.

Fr Fidelis Mukonori from Silveira House, was taking a nun to visit her sick father at 10pm when the car they were in was stopped by a group of five armed men. The nun was set free and ran back to her convent.

Fr Fidelis was forced to lie on the ground at gunpoint. Then he was bundled back into the car and driven for several miles. The men went through his belongings, took his mobile phone and personal items and then stopped and pushed him out of the vehicle.

The missionary returned to Silveira House on foot around midnight and reported the incident to the police. He was tired but unhurt.

"This was an armed robbery not an attack against Father Mukonori," a missionary spokesman said.

"It was so dark they couldn't see who was in the car. This kind of thing happens four or five times a week around here these days."
