Da Vinci's Last Supper goes on-line

Claire Bergin

Art lovers no longer have to travel to Milan's Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, to get a detailed view of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper. This week, a 16 billion pixel image of the masterpiece has been posted on the internet at: www.haltadefinizione.com

The Italian company HAL9000 have created an image 1,600 times more detailed than those taken with a typical 10 million pixel digital camera. Experts will be able to see segments as if they were just centimetres away.

Art curator Alberto Artioli said:"You can see how Leonardo made the cups transparent, something you can't ordinarily see." "You can also note the state of degradation the painting is in," he said.

Italian newspapers have recently been reporting that the 15th century painting is suffering from damage caused by pollution, in spite of the introduction of a special air filtering system. More than 350,000 people visit the painting each year.
