Sanctuary volunteers warm up for festival
Catholics volunteering at the Glastonbury Festival are taking
part in a special training event this weekend. Around 70 people
from throughout the West County are gathering in Pilton, the Somerset
village which hosts the world-famous music festival, to prepare
the smooth running of the Sanctuary Marquee the 'Church
at the Festival'.
Catholic parishioner form Taunton and Sanctuary Marquee volunteer Doug Lowe said: "We come together to be part of a community helping at the Glastonbury Festival and become part of the Christian Church willing to demonstrate the love of Christ in action by offering festival goers a warm welcome, a space to reflect, and a willingness to listen.
"It's also wonderful to part of one the world's most famous cultural events and it takes place on our doorstep!"
This weekend, volunteers will also be collecting exclusive Sanctuary Marquee tee-shirts featuring a unique design by the award-winning Taunton-based artist Suzy Southerton.
Suzy Southerton said: "My neighbour is one of the Sanctuary Marquee volunteers and he asked if I could come up with a design for their tee-shirts. I was really pleased to help and came up with the idea of a boat to symbolise both the well-known rain that sometimes falls on Glastonbury, and also in recognition of the Ark."
The Sanctuary Marquee works with Somerset Churches Together and provides the 'Church at the Festival' which can be found on Church Lane on the festival site. The Glastonbury Festival runs from 22 to 24 June.
