The kind-hearted children of St Edmund's Primary School in Abingdon, went on a sponsored walk recently, to raise money for their community.
After discussions, they decided to share the funds they raised equally between the school Infant library and the local community hospital at Marcham Road, Abingdon. The hospital, which has suffered funding cuts, provides an essential service to the local community, offering day care for the elderly, a weekly meeting place for sufferers of Alzheimer's, occupational and physical therapy care, palliative care.
This Tuesday, 2 July, Dawn Willoughby, Administrator at Abingdon Hospital, visited St Edmund's to be presented with a cheque for £471. Thanking the children and staff, Ms Wiloughby said she was delighted with their generous efforts. She said the money would be spent on some of the small luxuries for patients that normal funds do not stretch to cover, for example a new television for one of the day lounges.
The school was also pleased with the donation they received, and plan to spend their £471, refurbishing their Infant Library.
St Edmund's have recently chosen a school motto. Nominations were put forward by pupils. After a shortlist was drawn up by the Head, Governors and School Council (a representative body made up of children of all ages from throughout the school), all the children, aged 4 to 11 years, were invited to vote out of a choice of six mottos.
The voting was close, but the final winner adopted by the school - 'In our school everyday we learn, love and pray'.
Mr Ryan, head, said: "We felt it
appropriate at the beginning of this new millennium that we should
have a school motto that somehow embodied the ethos that we promote
at the school. In addition we wanted the children to be involved,
and for the motto to be something personal of meaning for each
of them."
