Barnabas in Schools - new RE resource
Elizabeth Roberts
Barnabas in Schools, the initiative designed by teachers to enable the profession to resource the Christian element of the RE curriculum at KS1 and KS2, has a new look.
The team of professionally trained and experienced teachers who produce and deliver the Barnabas RE Days has been expanded so that, near enough, schools anywhere in the country can benefit from these creative arts packages which can be adapted for each individual school, to meet the requirement of each local authority or RC or Anglican Diocesan Christian RE curriculum.
"Barnabas in Schools and the RE Days do not push any agenda other than fulfilling curriculum aims with expert input", says Richard Fisher, Chief Executive of BRF. "We ask for feedback each time we take a Barnabas RE Day on the road and we invariably hear that it is a real gift to a school: the creative activities not only encourage personal interaction from the children but also give anyone responsible for teaching RE whatever their own background or confidence new insights about re-energising how they themselves deliver the subject."
'Our overarching aim is to bring the messages of the Bible into the "here and now" of the pupils and maybe staff and parents, too inviting discussion, questioning and further discovery.'
St Joseph's Convent School, Reading, hosted a Barnabas RE Day recently. "It was a resounding success and we shall definitely be holding it again', said organiser Suzanne Kelly.
Meanwhile, www.barnabasinschools.org.uk, which sustains and consolidates the themes of the RE Days as well as offering ideas for collective worship and RE lesson outlines, has additional free and ready-to-use content - for example, the start of a body of material around classroom reflections. The site has also received a significant makeover to help teachers navigate and access the resources all the quicker.
