Book review: The Mystery of Faith

Bill Chambers

The Mystery of Faith , edited by James McEvoy and Maurice Hogan (The Columba Press 2005) ISBN 1-85607-487-0

This is a collection of papers which has grown out of a 2004 conference at Maynooth on "The Church and the Eucharist". It is a follow-up on Pope John Paul's encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistica (2003). Apart from the introduction and an initial chapter on the Liturgy by Cardinal Godfried Danneels the book is divided into sections entitled "Scripture", "Doctrine", and "The Tradition and Devotion of the Church". There are also two appendices, a bibliography, and an index.

In this review I can only mention one or two of the articles which have struck me as of interest. Cardinal Godfried Danneels gives four meditations on the Johannine narrative of the Last Supper, and Caroline Farey discusses artistic representations of Our Lady (with illustrations), and their relationship with the Eucharist. One is brought down to earth with a bump by Breda O'Brien, who discusses catechesis in schools. A pupil asks her: "If it is such a big deal, how come I have never heard it before?"

This is a book well worth reading.
