Bath
is hot for Catholic students
The Catholic Society at the University of Bath has been awarded
the prestigious 'Society of the Year' award at the Student Union's
2007 awards.
Society Co-president Tom Osman received the award at a recent ceremony. Co-president Theresa Pullen said: "This award is 'thank you' to all the students on the CathSoc committee and many others for their efforts in helping the society to have a great year.
"It also shows that enthusiasm for incorporating the Catholic faith into university life is alive and well and demonstrates students can succeed in receiving recognition for creating a thriving faith community."
Bath's CathSoc was also nominated for 'Most Innovative Society', because of the society's excellent lecture programme. Visits from speakers such as Professor Gavin D'Costa, Professor Paul Williams and Dr Severine Deneulin have drawn interest from the wider community and raised the profile of CathSoc within the university.
Catholic student at Bath, David Hodgson, added: "Faith is a central part of our activities. We enjoy regular Taizé prayer and Rosary for Peace meetings, thought-provoking 'Fun, Faith and Film' nights showing films with a strong moral dimension, Stations of the Cross during Lent, and daily morning prayer using the Divine Office.
"International Masses are celebrated by our Chaplain, Father Bill McLoughlin, every semester. Different languages and cultural traditions are used at these Masses which encourage us to reach out to Bath's large international student community.
"Perhaps the central focus to our activities is the biannual retreat to Nympsfield Marist Convent in the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside. We enjoy a weekend-long programme that seeks to strengthen us in faith, and love for both God and each other.
"Then there is the voluntary work carried out through the St Vincent de Paul group of CathSoc. We have visited Smallcombe care home and worked with homeless people in Bath at Julian House.
"Add to these, the regular social events, including ceilidhs, quiz nights, sports and less formal gatherings and you can see how the CathSoc committee has worked tirelessly to bring a diverse range of exciting events to Catholic students in Bath."
