Amazing
Grace reaches No 6 in UK film charts
In the few days since it opened at the weekend, the film Amazing
Grace has reached number xix in the UK film charts and is stil
climbing.
The movie, which tells the story of William Wilberforce's 20-year
fight to bring an end to the British slave trade, is showing in
over 230 cinemas around the UK.
"We're delighted to have made such a solid start," said
May-Lynn Chang of film producers Bristol Bay Productions. "We
are optimistic that church and school groups over the Easter break
will ensure a good run for the film. Indications are that word-of-mouth
recommendations for the film are high a vital factor for
long-term impact."
William Wilberforce committed his life to awakening the conscience of a nation and ending the dehumanising slave trade in the British Empire. The UK release of the film coincided with the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the UK.
The film boasts an impressive line-up of leading British actors including Ioan Gruffudd (Wilberforce), Michael Gambon, Albert Finney (who plays John Newton, a reformed slave ship captain and writer of the hymn from which the film derives its title), Benedict Cumberbatch and Rufus Sewell.
