Ampleforth staff gear up for marathon cycle race
Staff from Ampleforth in North Yorkshire will embark on a gruelling cycle race from Land's End to the School later this month, to raise funds for the St Martin's Ampleforth Appeal.
The race, which begins on Sunday May 27, will pitch St Martin's Ampleforth's Headmaster, Nick Higham, and Head of Pre-Prep, Mark Harrison against the school's Procurator, Peter Bryan and Fundraising Director, Jozef Mycielski.
The teams will leave St Martin's Ampleforth (from its site at Gilling Castle), North Yorkshire, on Saturday. May 26 after the annual parents' open day to travel down to Land's End for the gruelling return journey north.
The two teams aim to make the return journey over four and half days with the first team back declared the winners. Both teams are looking for sponsorship from parents, past pupils, the local community and friends of the School with funds raised going towards the St Martin's Ampleforth Appeal and a new stage in the sports hall.
Nick Higham said: "Mark Harrison and I decided to add another dimension to the Appeal by challenging Peter Bryan and Jozef Mycielski to a race. We will have to cover more than 100 miles per day which means an eye watering ten hours a day in the saddle.
"We are looking to raise more than £50,000 through sponsorship towards the permanent stage. There is a real need for a fully-equipped stage in our sports hall to accommodate plays, concerts and other celebrations; the new facility will become a fabulous facility for the local community."
Pupils, teachers, friends, family and
the local community are invited to join the cyclists for the last
ten miles of the race. The cyclists will be aiming to arrive at
Castle Howard between 12pm and 1pm on Thursday 31 May. Much needed
refreshments will then be provided at The Fairfax Arms, Gilling
East from 2pm.
