Letchworth: exhibition on the work of a pioneering priest

Josh Tidy

One hundred years ago, Father Adrian Fortescue came to Letchworth Garden City to set up a Catholic mission in the fledgling town, and founded the parish of St Hugh of Lincoln.

He was an extraordinary man. Fluent in eleven languages and the recipient of a rare triple doctorate, he was an unstinting and dedicated parish priest, a scholar of unparalleled quality and prodigious output, and a supremely talented artist and musician.

This year, to mark the centenary of the parish of St Hugh of Lincoln, an exhibition at the First Garden City Heritage Museum explores the life of this extraordinary man and the history of the church he founded in Letchworth Garden City.

Bringing together a wide range of beautiful and rarely-seen objects relating to Adrian Fortescue's life & work, the exhibition runs from 5 November until 26 January 2008.

The First Garden City Heritage Museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10am - 5pm. It is situated in the heart of Letchworth Garden City, just a few minutes walk from the station and town centre. Admission is just 50p for residents and £1 for non-residents.
